A snapshot rolls a VM back in seconds — but it lives on the same node. If the node dies, your snapshot dies with it. Snapshots are for before-you-change-something moments, not disaster recovery.
Three copies, two different media, one off-site. On a VPS that means: on-server snapshot + off-server file backup + one copy in another city. Our high-storage tiers exist for exactly this job.
Linux: /etc /home /var/www configs, sites, databases (dumped, not raw files). Windows: system state + data drives + IIS configs. Always dump databases; never copy live database files.
cron + rsync/borg to a second location, weekly at minimum. Then actually restore once to a test folder — an untested backup is a rumor, not a backup.
